site: Black Forest
Black Forest -
Starting at 35 feet under the boat, divers swim a few fin kicks to the
wall and the drop off. This site is unique, because the wall here has
a section that is actually undercut, producing a shadow down the face
of it. This shadow "fools" the black coral into thinking it is deeper (
black coral is very unusual because unlike most of the other corals, it
does not like strong ambient light, therefore it is normally found at
depths exceeding 150-200 feet). We are very lucky here that
because of the overhang and the shadow, we have lush abundant growths
at depths of only 60-100 feet! There are actually 3 different types of
black coral growing here. In addition there are some incredible
sponge growths here, and be sure not to forget to roll over on your back
and admire the dramatic silhouettes created by the overhang. Back
under the boat look for octopus dens and the burrows with yellow head
jawfish - cute little guys that will come out, sometimes in pairs, and
dance around for you if you are quiet! |
